Must Reads this Summer!

Two books to read this summer break must be…………A Mammoth Lesson: Teaching in the Digital Age by Brett Salakas and Converge: A futurist’s insights into the potential of our world as technology and humanity collide by Dr Catherine Ball. I’m honoured to know both these amazing authors. They are inspirational and leaders in their fields.

A Mammoth Lesson: Teaching in the Digital Age by Brett Salakas is unique in its writing: a fictional story, genuine historical events and how examples from the past can assist us in preparing our students for the future. Starts with a ‘story’ and who doesn’t like a story! Using the story to highlight the principles used by the ‘Wise Ones’ which can be used today….the acronym S.P.E.A.R.S ….S – Solution Focused, P – People Power, E – Everything Counts, A – Action and Impact, R – Risk Taking, S – Sharp Spears.

Brett’s book honours the past and brings it to the present and into the future. He shares tips and resources to demonstrate to educators the possibilities technology has in the education arena. In Brett’s words, “This book is for any educator looking to improve their teaching practice. You will find ideas and inspiration that will empower you to take risks and bring amazing transformations to every classroom every day!”

Converge: A futurist’s insights into the potential of our world as technology and humanity collide by Dr Catherine Ball is so powerful and thought provoking! It has the ‘Wow, really?’ factor! Catherine asks and answers many questions being asked in today’s world with her knowledge and experience with technology and science.

I found the book fascinating, bit scary and enlightening….it addresses so many topics for conversations to have with students, which in turn allows teachers to build relationships with students. All educators would benefit from reading this book to see how technology is impacting us all and why our students need to be aware, to have knowledge, to have control and to create with technology. Questions such as: What is the role AI can play in the resurgence of local manufacturing and creating new jobs? Can we vaccinate against cancer? How can drones save lives and assist Mother Nature in her fight to stop humans destroying our beloved planet?

As I mentioned, I am fortunate to know Brett and Catherine ….

Meeting up with Brett this year at EduTech Conference…when he told me about his book which was about to be printed!

Fun times with Catherine, dressing up for Dr Jenine Beekhuyzen (TechGirls Movement), as a Superhero!!
